FALLS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN CONSTRUCTION. In 2010, there were 264 fall fatalities (255 falls to lower level) out of 774 total fatalities in construction. These deaths are preventable.

Star Speed Scaffold has been designed to help prevent these unnecessary deaths by providing a fast, efficient, and safe working platform. Star Speed Scaffold was designed by professionals in the residential home building industry. These professionals saw the need to have a safer, more efficient way to provide fall protection to workers in their field.

Star Speed Scaffold has been designed to be installed and used in accordance with the OSHA regulations, 29 CFR 1926, Sub-part L. www.osha.gov

Inspection of scaffolding

Prior to each use Star Speed Scaffold and scaffold components shall be inspected for visible defects by a competent person before each work shift, and after any occurrence which could affect a scaffold’s structural integrity.

When inspecting Star Speed Scaffold be sure to look for the following:

  •  Broken welds
  • Damaged or bent frames
  • Damaged threads on adjustable clamps
  • Bent or missing nail stops
  • Damaged end rails
  • Damaged or cut wood scaffold planks
  • Missing components
  • Cracked or cut scaffold planks
  • Missing scaffold planks
  • Debris that causes tripping hazards

Star Speed Scaffold is not to be used with any other manufacturers components. No one other than Star Speed Scaffold is authorized to make modification to any of the components. Any unauthorized modification or repairs to any portion of Star Speed Scaffold voids all warranties.

Training

WARNING: Only trained and authorized persons are allowed to use Star Speed Scaffold. Training is available by contacting us.

WARNING:
Do not use our product until you have been trained properly. Death can result from improper use of this product. This product is intended specifically for trained construction professionals and should only be used under professional supervision.

NOTE:
Structures where our product is in use are not accessible to the general public. KEEP OFF THE SCAFFOLD.

• General Requirements

The user shall provide safe means of access for each employee erecting or dismantling a scaffold where the provision of safe access is feasible and does not create a greater hazard. The user shall have a competent person determine whether it is feasible or would pose a greater hazard to provide, and have employees use a safe means of access. This determination shall be based on site conditions.

In addition to wearing hardhats, each employee on a scaffold shall be provided with additional protection from falling hand tools, debris and other small objects through the installation of toe-boards, screens, or guardrail systems, or through the erection of debris nets, catch platforms, or canopy structures that contain or deflect the falling objects. When the falling objects are too large, heavy, or massive to be contained or deflected by any of the above-listed measures, the user shall place such potential falling objects away from the edge of the surface from which they could fall and shall secure those materials as necessary to prevent their falling.

• Planning

For each site where Star Speed Scaffold is going to be used, a competent person will make necessary estimates from building plans or by making site visits to estimate the number and type of components to be used. Star Speed Scaffold is designed to be installed on 8 foot centers. However, there may be special circumstances that require additional sections and components to safely provide access to areas being built.

Special consideration and planning should be given to structures that protrude from the edge of a building at shear wall locations and bay windows.

Star Speed Scaffold is designed to be installed by at least two people, who have been trained on installation procedures, safety procedures, and how to disassemble the scaffold when removing it from the structure being built.

Identify electrical hazards at each job site. Star Speed Scaffold is made of metal and will conduct electricity. Scaffolds shall not be erected, used, dismantled, altered, or moved such that they or any conductive material handled on them might come closer to exposed and energized power lines.

• Layout

The layout for each structure should begin at a stable corner of a building under construction. From one corner, the user would then place at every 8 feet or less Star Speed Scaffold B1000, depending upon the structure type. You can mark the location of each component with a marker, pencil, paint or other suitable means. Continue with this layout until all portions of the structure where scaffolding is needed to provide safety is installed.

On a right angle, from the corner where you started, you will need to determine where your scaffolding planks will end. This will allow you to determine the need for addition Star Speed Scaffold B1000; to ensure the end of the scaffold plank does not exceed 18” of overlap from the last scaffold component.

Special consideration and layout will be needed to ensure safe transition around protruding portions of the building. You should plan to have access to additional Star Speed Scaffold B1000, should the need arise.

• Installation

Now that the layout is complete, Star Speed Scaffold B1000 is designed to be installed from the interior portion of the building being built. Begin by sliding the first Star Speed Scaffold B1000 into place at the corners of the building. Be sure to place this Star Speed Scaffold B1000 as close to the corner as possible. Then begin in a right angle direction installing additional Star Speed Scaffold B1000 when necessary.

Each Star Speed Scaffold B1000 must be completely nailed off at the base plate and the adjustable screw brace shall be firmly positioned on supporting members of the structure being built. Then secure the adjustable screw base with two nails.

Each Star Speed Scaffold B1000 must be plumb and square to the structure being built prior to any scaffold planks being installed or used.

When all of the Star Speed Scaffold B1000 are put in place, begin placing scaffold planks from one end of the scaffold and overlap at each Star Speed Scaffold B1000 in a right angle direction until you have fully planked each run with a minimum of 3 (three) planks and toe board where necessary.

When all the planks have been placed securely to prevent any displacement, you can then begin placing the guardrail and mid-rails in their proper places.

Installation Checklist

  1. A competent person is on site and is completing this checklist
  2. All scaffolding components have been inspected and are free of damage
  3. Each scaffold run has appropriate number of scaffold frames in place (Maximum 8′ foot center)
  4. Only scaffold grade planks are being used
  5. Scaffold planks are not cracked, cut or damaged
  6. 3 planks are in place on each scaffold frame
  7. Planks are overlapping the scaffold frame at least 6″ and not more than 18″
  8. Guard rails and mid-rails are constructed from 2×4 DF #1 or equal
  9. Guard rails and mid-rails are in place and secured from displacement
  10. Guard rails and mid-rails are in place on all open sides and ends

Ladder Safety

NOTE: If a ladder is used in any part of the installation, they must be used in accordance with OSHA guidelines and manufacturers recommendations. Only properly trained persons should be allowed to use ladders to access the scaffolding if necessary.

When the ladder is placed against a structure which is not a part of the scaffold, the scaffold shall be secured against the sideways thrust exerted by the ladder.
